Communicating complex weather information simply and clearly is the mission of NoodweerBenelux, an independent weather service from Belgium. That's why NoodweerBenelux joined forces with This might work to create an innovative app that leverages the power of their weather community.
There are already many weather apps out there. So how do you innovate in this space? One thing NoodweerBenelux knows how to do is to engage with their thriving community of weather enthusiasts. After talking to the community they knew what their fans wanted: a crowdsourced weather app that speaks to both weather experts and novices. The challenge? Create a simple-to-use app that provides accurate information and keeps the fanbase engaged.
During an initial design sprint and in close collaboration with the community, the minimal viable features for the app were determined. The app needed to stand apart from NoodweerBenelux. We created a new product branding and defined a visual style to reflect the character of the new app. Weerflash was born! To build the app at speed and realize our custom UI design, we chose Flutter for the mobile app development. The nature of the app means there will be traffic spikes when the userbase reports weather events. Firebase is perfectly suited to handle these types of traffic spikes and pairs up nicely with Flutter.
One thing is certain, the community is loving it. During the first 5 days, more than 3.000 people downloaded the app and reported over 10.000 observations. Users are thrilled and this is showing in the app's ratings and reviews. We are very excited to see how this will evolve.
Weerflash is focused on unique weather phenomenon and shares them in real-time with users. A beautiful sundown, a curious kind of stormcloud, or a beautiful halo in the skies? Weerflash has got you covered.
To further enhance the experience for weather fanatics you can filter any kind of report and select certain timeframes to see where and when an event occurred. Replaying the past to get valuable insights is especially helpful in the event of extreme weather reports.

After a long search for a good partner, we ended up choosing This might work. The combination of their design and development skills was the deciding factor to start a collaboration.
